Continuing Education System
The American Institute of Architects requires its members complete a minimum of 18 learning units annually The 18 units must include 8 hours of Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) learning units, of which 4 units must be on the topic of Sustainable Design. Individual states may have their own additional requirements.
Masonry Edge/the StoryPole is pleased to be able to provide AIA continuing education distance learning through our publishing partner, Masonry Institute of Michigan.
Each issue includes a 10-question multiple-choice test based on two articles that correspond to the theme of the issue and meet the AIA requirements for HSW or HSW-SD. In order to be eligible for HSW credit, the topic must address anything that relates to the structural integrity or soundness of a building or building site. In Masonry Edge/the StoryPole, those articles will address how some aspect of masonry relates to the structural integrity or soundness of a building. Requirements for HSW are intended to protect the public and may be defined and/or required by law. Issues of Sustainability include sustainable design intent and innovation; materials and construction; and more. Masonry is a sustainable choice for designers. Masonry's role in a sustainable environment will sometimes be addressed in AIA qualified articles.
